The
Historic City of Bath
Bath
is one of, if not the most beautiful city in England. It has an eclectic population of approximately 85,000 people with a rich and varied architectural
heritage.
The Roman occupation of Britain at the beginning
of the first Millennium left us a priceless classical legacy including
the spectacular Roman
Baths themselves.
In the more recent 18th century Bath became
the centre of a Georgian culture renowned for its opulence, good
taste and extravagance. The Crescents and Terraces built then still
stand today and are a testament to this century’s refined
architectural elegance. ‘The Picturesque Movement’ with
its love of the sublime and the ‘perfect line of beauty’
found its ultimate expression here in Bath. Lansdown
Crescent for example is probably the best showcase of the Georgian’s
love of contrasting classical forms with the natural shape and textures
of nature.
The
city as I’m sure you know is also endowed with great natural
beauty with hot springs, rolling hills and pretty wooded escarpments.
One can look down from the hills in the North above Bear Flat and
see the whole city with the majestic river Avon meandering through
the valley. What a picture that makes!
UNESCO
awarded Bath its special
World Heritage Site status not just for its architecture but
for this unique, unspoilt and natural setting. It all provides the
perfect backdrop and subject for photography of many kinds especially
Architectural and Land or City scape.
Neill Menneer has, since
his arrival in 1987, being photographing Bath’s many glories,
in all their seasons and moods. His images have been published on
literally hundreds of card designs, calendars, posters and in a
number of best selling books. He now invites you to join him on
a voyage of discovery!
